LEARNING TO READ
Good Reading Skills Require:
- Understanding of phonemes (the smallest meaningful unit of sound in language)
- Understanding phonics (the relationships between letters and sounds)
- Developing fluency (recognizing words and reading sentences quickly and accurately)
- Knowing enough vocabulary to gain word meaning, and good reading comprehension - the essence and goal of reading itself
5 Basic Components Require:
- The sound structure of oral language
- Connections between sounds and spelling
- Relationships between letters and sounds through phonics
- Building conceptual knowledge for the students
- Comprehension strategies for a real understanding of the text
